Testing your well regularly is an important part of keeping your water safe. There are two types of tests that we recommend. The first are general tests that should be done every year, every few years, or when a home changes hands (see
the Private Wells Program website for more information). The second types are special tests, which we recommend for some places in Rhode Island.
To check if there are special recommendations for your well, enter the address in the search bar at the top of the map and see if it falls inside one or both colors.
▮ The green shapes show areas where we recommend testing for
arsenic. Arsenic is a toxic metal that was used as a pesticide, especially for orchards, and in some industries.
Read more on arsenic here.
▮ The blue shapes show areas where we recommend testing for
beryllium. Beryllium is a metal that naturally occurs in the bedrock, but can cause a number of health problems.
